Elios Society

About

The mission of the Elios Society is to preserve and promote the spirit, values, and ideals of our Hellenic culture and heritage, for the benefit of our youth, our membership, and the Greek American community through a process of mutual enlightenment and fellowship.

The Elios Society utilizes two primary strategies to further its mission:

  • To position the organization as a leader in the community through good works and projects.
  • To celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of those individuals who best exemplify our Hellenic spirit and values and who have advanced Hellenic causes.

Incorporated in 1995, the Elios Society is nonprofit and nonpartisan and has tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(7) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.

Our Story

Founded in 1995 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Elios Society was established by a group of visionary second- and third-generation Greek American professionals, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders who shared a deep commitment to preserving and promoting Hellenic culture and values. Among the founding members were GeorgeM.Marcus, FanisEconomidis, Andy Efstratis, Dr. KennethFrangadakis, John Gumas, TedLaliotis, and Steve Padis — individuals whose leadership and foresight helped shape the Society’s guiding mission.

United by their Hellenic heritage and inspired by the ideals of education, philanthropy, and leadership, the founders envisioned an organization that would serve as a bridge between generations and a beacon of cultural pride for the Greek American community.

To advance this mission, the Elios Society established its philanthropic arm, the Elios Charitable Foundation, which has since awarded over $2 million in grants to support cultural, educational, and community initiatives, primarily in Northern California.

Today, the Elios Society remains rooted in its founding values—fostering community, celebrating heritage, and investing in future generations. What began as a vision among a dedicated few has grown into a vibrant organization making a lasting impact on the cultural and civic life of the Greek American community and beyond.
